What are your three priority issues and why:

Education – No one tool can better bring prosperity to Idaho citizens than education.  I have spent countless hours of my life devoted to the issue. I believe educators need the respect of the community and that they can only attain that goal by giving children the knowledge and will to succeed in life. I believe in Pay for Performance, a system where teachers who instill knowledge are given greater compensation; teachers who need help are given remediation and mentoring; and teachers who cannot perform or be remediated are asked to leave the profession. I believe in small schools that can be the hub of neighborhood communities and where children are not lost. High tech delivery of education has not been implemented in Idaho so I cosponsored the Idaho Education Network bill, a bill that eventually should bring high speed Internet connections to every Idaho school. I believe that property tax is an antiquated way to fund maintenance and operation of schools and supported removal of school M&O from property tax support in ’07.

Transportation – My first experience with Idaho politics involved improvements to US95 in the 90’s. As a founding member of the Idaho Highway Coalition, we helped influence Rep. Chenoweth’s effort to start improvements in the Worley area, an effort that just now is nearing completion. I have supported GARVEE bonding to speed up highway improvements and that effort has begun in the Garwood to Sagle section of US95. I am the Idaho chair for Inland Pacific Hub, a $1M study of our transportation assets and how best to make north Idaho and eastern Washington more accessible to the Pacific Rim. Included in the study are roads, railroads, ports, airports, and fiber. Our area lies at the intersection of many transportation systems and economic development from intermodal opportunities must be exploited.
