POSITIONS UP FOR ELECTION: Mayor and 3 City Council positions

COUNCILMEN UP FOR ELECTION: The incumbents up for the 2009 City Election are Council Seat 2: Mike Kennedy, Council Seat 4: Woody McEvers, and Council Seat 6: Deanna Goodlander.

HOW CITY COUNCILMEN ARE ELECTED: City elections are classified as "by seat", which means a candidate must declare which seat number they are running for. City elections do not run by political affiliation.

CANDIDATES: Any qualified elector living within the city limits of Coeur d’Alene may become a candidate by submitting the declaration of candidacy and petition of candidacy, or by submitting their declaration as a write-in candidate.

CANDIDATE PACKETS: Packets with all the necessary forms for becoming a candidate can be picked up at the City Clerk’s office at 710 E. Mullan Avenue, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m.

CHIEF ELECTION OFFICIAL: Susan Weathers, City Clerk is the Chief Election Official for the City of Coeur d’Alene. QUALIFIED ELECTOR FOR CITY ELECTIONS: A qualified elector is anyone who has registered to vote and has resided within the city limits at least 30 days prior to election.

VOTER REGISTRATION: Anyone who is 18 years of age, a resident within the City of Coeur d’Alene and have not been found guilty of a felony, can register to vote. You can register at City Hall, 710 E. Mullan Ave., or at the County Elections office at 315 W. Garden Ave. The City and County have joint registration, so when you register at either place you are registered to vote in any City, County, State, or Federal election. In order to register to vote you must have a photo ID, either a driver’s license or State issued identification card. If the address on the photo ID is not your current address, you must show proof of current residence such as a copy of a utility bill or bank statement. The deadline for registering to vote at the polls is October 9, 2009. Following that date, you may register and vote absentee until November 2, 2009. You may also register and vote at your designated polling place on Election Day, November 3, 2009

ABSENTEE VOTING: Any qualified elector may vote absentee from the time the ballots are available until 5:00 p.m. on November 2nd, the day before election. It is anticipated that absentee ballots will be available beginning two weeks prior to Election Day. You may vote absentee at either City Hall at 710 E. Mullan Ave. or at the County Elections Office at 315 W. Garden Ave., Coeur d’Alene from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. – Monday through Friday. An absentee ballot can be mailed to you upon request. Please send your written request to the County Elections Office at PO Box 9000, Coeur d’Alene ID, 83816-9000. Please remember to sign your name to the written request (if you are husband and wife, both must sign the written request if you would like a ballot mailed to each of you). Written requests for mailed ballots must be received no later than October 18, 2009.

WHERE TO VOTE/VOTING PRECINCTS: The City currently has 26 voting precincts. By Idaho Code, the City’s precincts must match the County’s precincts as closely as practical. The listing of voting precincts and their polling places will be published in the Coeur d’Alene Press approximately two weeks prior to Election Day. COST OF AN ELECTION: The estimated cost for conducting a city election is approximately $17,000.

LAST ELECTION STATS: Total ballots cast at the last general election (November 2007) were 8,349. Total registered voters were 19,907. Voter turnout was 24.9%.
