Describe your educational background:  I went through public schools in Missoula, and graduated from the University of Montana, with honors, with a BA in History in l967.  I received my Masters Degree in Religious Studies from Hartford Seminary in l973, and completed coursework for teacher certification at the University of Idaho in l974.  Since then I have earned approximately 90 hours of semester credits through various classes, seminars, institutes, and other venues.

Describe your community involvement:  My teaching position lead to community involvement in various ways, e.g., serving as advisor to student groups such as Youth and Government, being supervisor for the Youth Court program, and speaking at community events.  I have been actively involved coaching girls basketball and softball in the community recreation program. For over thirty years I have been an active member of the Presbyterian Church.  I have been a board member of the Coeur d’Alene Audubon Society, belong to KEA, serve on the board of Community Action Partnerships, and am joining the board of the Tubbs Hill Foundation.  I was first elected to the legislature in 2002.

Describe your employment history for the past 10 years including dates:  From

September 1974 until my retirement in June 2005, I was a teacher at Coeur d’Alene High School, and was chosen Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2002.

What are your three priority issues and why?  Creating living wage jobs, providing quality educational opportunities for all, and strengthening child care safety are my three top priorities.

Idaho’s median income is well below the national average and, while progress has been made, we need to continue efforts to create a diverse economy with good jobs. This is especially important because, as the cost of living continues to rise, many service related jobs do not provide a living wage.

The ability to earn a decent living is tied to education and workforce training, so those opportunities need to be available to all.  I am a strong supporter of public education, and I support of the entire mission of NIC, including academic programs, professional technical education and workforce training. Education and training are keys to individual and community wide economic well being, and I will oppose any attempt to weaken, under-fund, or privatize public education.

Having a safe and healthy place for child care is important to working parents. Current Idaho law is filled with loopholes that allow individuals to take care of children without having a criminal history background check or undergoing any health or safety inspections of their facilities.  I will continue to work to change the law to close these loopholes.

These three priorities support families, and in turn contribute to the local economy.  Those are values I support.
