What are your three priority issues and why:

1.       This country is experiencing a severe economic downturn and as a member of the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee I am in a unique position to be able to help our state weather the storm by making sure every tax dollar you pay is being used wisely and for the needs of our citizens rather than wants.

District 2 has a number of issues that I have been working diligently to address. The recent FEMA floodway designation in the Kellogg/Smelterville area is one example.  I have used my position as state senator to get all of the players both state and federal at the table to find a workable solution to the problem.  At my request Governor Otter has asked the Bureau of Homeland Security to use their resources to help community leaders in the Silver Valley.   Another example is the huge backlog of infrastructure needs in rural Idaho.  Almost all of our rural communities have sewer and water system needs with little or no money to fix the problems.  I have used my influence to assist these communities gain grant dollars to help fund improvements.   I worked with community members and the Idaho DEQ to find a solution to raw sewage pouring into Canyon Creek.  We were able to put septic systems in by helping the landowners get low interest loans and in some cases completely funding the systems for low income seniors.  The water in Canyon Creek is now running clean and sewage free. Energy costs will continue to be a focus of mine.  We as a state must find a way to deal with trash disposal without costing our taxpayers money they can’t afford. One solution is to build community sized waste to energy plants.  These small plants would not only generate power, but would help . . .
